We are celebrating Fairytales, Myths and Legends in this year's Summer of Stories, an annual celebration of children's literature from 25th July to 25th August. We're planning on growing a Beanstalk of stories up The Witham stairs, working with children to create a story-inspired children's menu in the cafe and turning our Caravan into a Story Stage with fancy dress clothes and props. Carry on scrolling down to find out what creative and magical family delights await you this Summer.
You never know when you might stumble across an enchanting chair, made out of the most creative and beautiful textile fabrics, crafted with passion, care and the greatest imagination. Pause, enjoy and revel in the storytelling delights from our magnificent chair - with various habitats and wondrous animal kingdoms to explore and a multitude of stories to enjoy from wizards, ogres, fairies, knights, goblins and more!
Watch out for the chair on Tuesday and Friday mornings and enjoying some Storytelling Busking, out and about in Barnard Castle.
Wednesdays during the Summer of Stories is dedicated to creative crafts! From making your very own moving monster, beasts and beauties, and creating magical maps to link all of your favourite fairy-tales, these sessions are the perfect opportunity to let your arty fingertips run wild! And what's not to love about building your own cardboard castle for all those young wannabee architects!?
There are also opportunities to enjoy and participate in theatrical productions this summer. Turrets Youth Theatre bring Gradmother's Footsteps, an original story production based on the tale of Little Red Riding Hood. Children can also show off their singing and dancing skills in Jukebox Musical Summer School - a week long musical theatre summer school where participants will work towards producing their own show working with professional theatre makers.
Don't miss the beautiful visual arts exhibition in the gallery: Fairytales, Myths and Legends - a visual feast of work from artists across theregion that inspire the imagination of visitors young and old alike. The Magic of Illustration exhibition also brings to life books, music, characters and drawings by local and nationally celebrated artists.
We are proud to thank Darlington Building Society who supports the family and school's programme at The Witham
